3 Reasons For A Vacuum Sealer

I’ve mentioned several times my love for the FoodSaver.  I’ve owned my machine for over 10 years.  It sits permanently on my counter top and I use it almost daily.  Let me break down why this vacuum sealer is so valuable.

Check out how easy it is to use.

3 Reasons For A Vacuum Sealer

1.  Meal Prepping

By now you’ve realized meal prepping for the week is invaluable.  A vacuum sealer will elevate your prepping process to higher level.  Imagine grabbing a healthy pre-made salad for lunch each day.  Do you know how much time and stress you’ll save?

I’ve nixed all store-bought juice.  The downside is juicing takes time and preparation.  Batch making juice isn’t wise because the shelf life is 48 hours tops!  With the vacuum sealer, I’m able to store my juice up to five days before it becomes rancid.

Removing the air allows me to have fresh homemade juice throughout the week without worrying about unnecessary additives and preservatives.

2.  Buy In Bulk

A vacuum sealer allows you to buy in bulk and take advantage of sale items, like those awesome BOGO deals.  How many times have you passed on a great sale because your family won’t consume it before it spoils?

Not any more.  A vacuum sealing keeps your produce fresh two to three times longer.

3.  Save Money

vacuum sealerAfter reasons 1 and 2, saving money is stating the obvious.  My vacuum sealer has paid for its self a hundred times over saving me thousands of dollars throughout the years.  Yes THOUSANDS!

Stop throwing away rotten produce.  Save your money and your food with a vacuum sealer.

My machine came with canisters and re-usable bags.  The canisters are nice but I prefer mason jars.  The seal seems to be stronger.  The mason jar attachment is sold separately.  Buy the mason jar attachment and invest in mason jars too.

Things you can store with the mason jars:

  • Soups, Stews
  • Salads, Lettuces
  • Fruit, Vegetables
  • Homemade Milk
  • Homemade Juice
  • Nuts, Seeds
  • Rice, Quinoa
  • Sugar, Flour

There are many uses for the re-usable bags.  I like to use them for my pre-made frozen meals.  These bags prevent freezer burn preserving freshness and food quality.

I’m able to eat heather, buy in bulk, take advantage of sales, and preserve my food 3 times longer.  The investment is definitely worth it.

I’m not tied to any particular brand.  This just happens to be the brand I chose.  You’ll reap the benefits from any vacuum sealing machine.

5 Grown-Up Kitchen Must-Haves

You don’t need restaurant appliances to prepare delicious meals.  With a few kitchen staples, you’ll be able to create healthy palatable cuisines that’ll make you want to stay in and cook.

Consider theses kitchen must-haves for yourself.  I only promote quality and durability not any particular brand.  So after you read this go check your mail, dig out that blue and white Bed, Bath & Beyond coupon, and go save some money.

6.  (Bonus) The FoodSaver

must-havesOk, the FoodSaver isn’t a must-have, but trust me you want it.  This handy machine has literally paid for its self over the years saving me hundreds of dollars.

Recently FoodSaver introduced the mason jar attachment, which changed my world.  My salads last THREE TIMES longer now.  I also use this to extend the life of fruit, veggies, nut milk, cheese, deli meat, and anything I freeze.

Check out my salad in a jar or homemade frozen meal process.

5.  Food Processor

must-havesIf you want to take your kitchen skills up a notch, then invest in one of these bad boys.  This thing slices, dices, chops, shreds, creams, mixes, and more.  It’s great for sauces, salsa, dips, butters, batters, and dough.

What’s the difference between a food processor and a blender?  Well unlike a blender, the food processor gives you better control over the texture of your food.  Like your salsa chunky?  You’ll want to make it with your food processor using the pulse setting.

How do you like your nut butter?  I like it creamy.  Below, I made spicy roasted almond butter.  Talk about fresh and delicious, that didn’t hang around my house too long.

4.  The Crock Pot

must-havesThis is arguably the most convenient kitchen appliance known to man.  There aren’t to many appliances where you can make an entire meal in one pot and leave the house while it cooks.  It’s great for soups, stews, roasting, and even baking.  Your kitchen is not complete without a crock pot.

Below, I made a vegetable soup.  Every other week, I make a soup composed of anything in my refrigerator that looks like it’s about to spoil.  I don’t have a specific recipe except chicken broth, onions and garlic.  Everything needs garlic.

The crock pot is definitely an essential grown-up kitchen appliance that everyone needs.  It just makes life easier.

3.  Cast Iron Skillet

Every real grown-up should own and know how to use a cast iron skillet.  Once seasoned properly they are invaluable.  Cast iron is remarkably versatile and can easily be transferred from the stove top into the oven.  Iron can withstand extremely high heat and is perfect for searing steaks.  As a matter of fact, it’s the only way I make a steak.

Are you taking an iron supplement?  Well if you cook with your cast iron skillet, you’ll increase your iron intake naturally.

Below, I made a Chicago style deep dish pizza.  I adore making pizza with my skillet because the dough rises to perfection every time.  The inside is soft and chewy while the outside is golden and crispy.  Heat distributes evenly in cast iron helping your food cook to perfection.

2.  A Good Blender

must-havesOk, so I said I wasn’t going to endorse any particular brand.  Well for the Vitamix, I’m making an exception.  This blender is the BOMB!  By far it’s the best appliance investment I’ve made.  Although I’m in love with this blender, it’s rather expensive.  I found mine at Costco for $359.

You may not want to shove out hundreds of dollars for a blender.  But, if you’re into green smoothies, you’ll definitely want to invest in a good quality mixer.  You’ll be able to make soups, sauces, cocktails, ice cream, flour, and powdered sugar.

Below, I made a grapefruit smoothie.  Sorry folks, but it’s virgin.  I often times decorate my smoothie in a pretty cocktail glass to make myself feel better. must-haves

 1.  Real stainless steel cookware

must-havesGrown-up kitchens invest in quality cookware.  Stainless steel is a staple piece that you absolutely need to own.  Like cast iron, steel can easily be transferred directly from the stove top into the oven.

Real stainless steel is heavy and resist corrosion; so it will virtually last forever.  Since it doesn’t corrode like teflon or other non-stick products, you won’t have to worry about toxic chemicals being released into your food.

Below, I made orange chicken.  Check out the recipe here.  I’ve used this for roasting, sautéing, and stir fry.   Stainless steel is worth every penny.

Follow these tips to turn your kitchen into your own gourmet restaurant.  Cooking at home gives you control over what goes into your body and establishes the foundation for a healthier lifestyle.

Produce wash

Homemade Produce Wash

Making your own produce wash is easy.  You can add it to a spray bottle or use it to soak your produce.   Here, I’ll demonstrate my process and show you why you want to use a produce wash.

We all know we should do it.  So why don’t we?  Well most of us do, but it’s normally done by running it under the sink.  Guilty✋🏽!  While that’s not terrible, there’s a better way.  Trust me.

I mostly buy my produce organic.  But, just because it’s organic doesn’t mean I don’t have to wash it.  Organic foods still have trace amounts of pesticides and this wash will help remove them.  You’ll also remove dirt, contaminates, and bugs lurking on your food.  If you don’t buy your produce organic, make sure you definitely use this cleaner.

This stuff is cheap, quick, and easy to make.  All you’ll need is white vinegar, filtered water and fresh lemon juice.  I use a ratio of  2 cups of water to 1 cup of vinegar, with a table-spoon of lemon juice.  If I have a lot of produce, I double the recipe.

The vinegar is used to gently cleanse the produce and lemon juice is used to help preserve it.  This will help your food last longer.  I am always trying to save a dollar. 💰😉

Once your cleaner is made, soak your produce for 5 minutes.  After that, rinse your produce with cool filtered water and let it air dry.  I like to use paper towels.  Once your produce is dry, store it.  When I’m cleaning berries, I like to freeze half of them for smoothies.

I hope this helps.
